Coloniam Arcilaida
Aksaray
Listen to the story
Coloniam Arcilaida, "to the colony of Archelais", is the name borrowed from a Roman register of routes for a town that the map marks with a symbol but no name; the map itself probably read Archelaida. The town is Aksaray in Turkey. Archelaus, the last king of Cappadocia, refounded it on the site of little Garsaura, and the emperor Claudius made it a Roman colony. After Caesarea it was Cappadocia's most important crossroads, where the highway from Europe to Syria met the road from Lycaonia to Armenia, and it was a bishopric from 325 into the fourteenth century.
