Clampeia
Amantea
Listen to the story
Clampeia was a harbour town of the Bruttii on the coast of Calabria, known to Greek writers as Lampetia. In 204 BC, during the war against Hannibal, a Roman consul took it by storm, as the historian Livy records, and it seems never to have recovered: the Roman writer Pliny calls it merely the site of Clampetia. It is traditionally placed at Amantea in Italy, though without proof, and a list of places compiled in Ravenna names Clampetia and Amantea side by side. Even the map's forty Roman miles from the previous station, about fifty-nine kilometres, are doubted; some read eleven instead.
