Colonia Traiana
Xanten
Listen to the story
Colonia Traiana, the colony of Trajan, is today Xanten on the lower Rhine in Germany. The town grew up beside the legionary camp of Vetera, was burnt down in the Batavian revolt of AD 69 and 70, and was raised to the rank of a colony by the emperor Trajan between 98 and 107. The map puts forty Roman miles between the town and Vetera, although the two lay almost side by side, so the figure is probably a copying error. A list of places compiled in Ravenna calls the town Troia, a form common in the Middle Ages that returns as Tronje in the Nibelungenlied.
