Cibale

Vinkovci

Listen to the story

Cibalae, now Vinkovci in Croatia, stands on the map as a town symbol without its name. The copyist probably left the name out because there was no room for it between the drawing and a river just above. Yet this was an important road junction in the province of Lower Pannonia, where the road from Sirmium divided. The Greek historian Zosimus describes the town on a hill, reached by a narrow road running beside a deep lake. Here Constantine defeated Licinius in AD 314, and the emperor Valentinian was born here.
