Chadas

~ Erciş

Listen to the story

Chadas was a sizeable station on the road that ran across Armenia from Satala to Artaxata, seventeen Roman miles beyond Armanas and twenty-four short of Colchion. A list of places compiled in Ravenna also knows it. Its site is uncertain: the modern identification points roughly to Erciş in eastern Turkey, while older research looked for it in the valley of the Araxes, below the mountains around Ararat. The name is probably not Latin. It may be Persian, but more likely belongs to an older local language, and a cuneiform inscription from Van mentions a place called Kadas.
