City
Chidum
Tekir
The map's Chidum is Cnidus, the old Greek city at the very tip of the Carian peninsula, whose ruins lie at Tekir in Turkey. The Tabula places it in Lycia, although it really belonged to Caria. The Greek geographer Strabo describes two harbours and a small island joined to the mainland by a causeway, making it almost a double city. Its chief goddess was Aphrodite, and her sanctuary held the celebrated statue of her by the sculptor Praxiteles, which the Roman writer Pliny describes. The astronomer Eudoxus came from here. Scholars still disagree whether the town always stood on this tip or was moved there from the middle of the peninsula around 370 BC.
