Road station
In Monte
In Monte, on the mountain, is a name the map tucks between two mountain ranges, surely by design. No other source knows a station of this name; it probably lay on the road through the Cilician Gates. One older suggestion takes it for a misunderstood Mopsucrenae, the last station of Cilicia at the foot of the Taurus, where, as the historian Ammianus tells, the emperor Constantius died after travelling by difficult roads. The road line was forgotten here, and the figure of twelve miles, about eighteen kilometres, to Tarsus stands oddly close to the name instead of along the route.
