Cosedia

Coutances

Listen to the story

Cosedia is the old name of Coutances in Normandy, a town that later took the name Constantia in honour of the emperor Constantius Chlorus. The Cotentin peninsula around it still carries that later name. A Roman register of routes also lists Cosedia, and late Roman records station a garrison there, together with settled Batavian and Suebian soldiers shared with Bayeux. Scholars once placed Cosedia at a string of other spots, from Isigny to Carhaix. On the map, the roof of the town's twin-towered drawing looks traced over, perhaps a slip by the copyist of around 1200.
