Listen to the story
Cornacum was a strongly garrisoned fort on the road that followed the Danube bank through the Roman province of Lower Pannonia, and its remains lie at Sotin near Vukovar in Croatia. The geographer Ptolemy lists it among the towns on the river and uses it as a landmark, naming the bend of the Danube after it. In late Roman times it housed cavalry, a unit of shield-bearing horsemen and a troop of Dalmatian riders, and an inscription suggests a detachment of the Third Legion stood there too. Both Sotin and neighbouring Vukovar have yielded very many small finds.
