Crouciaconnum

Carentau (Miller) · Carentan (Barrington

Crovcia connvm is Crociatonum, the harbour town of the Venelli on the Cotentin peninsula in Normandy, near today's Carentan. The Greek geographer Ptolemy lists it as their port. The Venelli submitted to Caesar's officer Crassus in 57 BC, rose again the following year and sent men to relieve Alesia; later their chief town moved to Cosedia, renamed after the emperor Constantius and today called Coutances. The map splits the name in two and garbles its ending.
