Crontona

Crotone

Listen to the story

Crontona, with a stray n, is Croton, now Crotone, one of the great Greek cities of southern Italy, founded by Achaeans at the bidding of the Delphic oracle. Here Pythagoras founded his school, the city was famous for its athletes, and in 510 BC it destroyed its rich rival Sybaris. Its renowned temple of Hera stood on the nearby Lacinian cape, where one column still rises above the sea and gives Capo Colonna its name.
