Augustoduro

Bayeux

Avgvstodvro is Augustodurum, the Fort of Augustus, today Bayeux in Normandy, the chief town of the Baiocasses, whose name the town later took. Roman remains have been found in Bayeux, and several milestones from the country around count their leagues from Augustodurum. The name joins the emperor's name to the Celtic duro, a fort, a Celtic and Roman mixture that points to the time of Augustus. Traces of a Roman bridge were seen in the old bed of the Vire, on the road from here.
