Duroaverus

Canterbury

Listen to the story

Duroaverus was the chief town of the Cantii, the people whose name lives on in Kent, and apart from London the most important place in their land. Later the town took their name as Cantuaria, which became Canterbury. The road drawn from here to Dover, the port of Dubris, holds a small puzzle: it carries no distance figure and swings wide to the left, joining another road just short of the port, apparently so as not to be confused with the route to Lemavio running between the town and the coast. The seven miles back to Durolevum should probably read twelve.
