Roribis

Rochester

Roribis is Durobrivae, today Rochester in Kent, on the road from London towards the coast. The first syllable, Du, stood on the lost first sheet of the map, so the copyist began the name with Ro, writing it with a capital and on a slant. The Roman register of routes spells it Durobrivis, and the English historian Bede still knew the old name, as Dorubrevi. Not far away, at Maidstone, lie extensive Roman ruins, perhaps a place that the list of places compiled in Ravenna calls Mutuantonis.
