Ruscione

Château Roussillon

Ruscione is Château Roussillon, a little east of Perpignan, once a Celtic hill town on the river Têt whose name survives in Roussillon. In the late summer of 218 BC Gallic chiefs gathered their warriors here to stop Hannibal, but he won them over by negotiation, as the Roman historian Livy tells. Under Rome it received Latin rights and soon became a colony; its coins read colonia Ruscino. The silver cups from Vicarello list it as a station on the road to Spain.
