Sabate

(town close to Sabatinus L.) (Barrington) · Trevigniano (Miller)

Listen to the story

Sabate was a vanished Etruscan town that gave its name to the lake of Bracciano, the Lacus Sabatinus, perhaps at Trevignano on the northern shore. Close by lie the hot springs of Vicarello, where in 1852 excavators found a basin full of gold, silver and bronze offerings to Apollo and the nymphs, among them the four silver cups engraved with the stations from Cádiz to Rome. On the map, between Sabate and Forum Clodii, stands an odd sign, probably a copyist's garbled mark for one mile.
