Rutharoto
Butrinti
Rutharoto is a badly garbled Buthrotum, today Butrint in Albania, a harbour town facing Corfu, perhaps miscopied by a mapmaker who did not know his Virgil: in the Aeneid, Aeneas finds here a little Troy, where Helenus and Andromache had settled. Cicero's friend Atticus owned land here and paid the sum Caesar demanded when the town was about to lose its fields; later it became a Roman colony. Its walls, a theatre with inscriptions freeing slaves, Roman baths and early Christian churches survive.
