Road station
Sabatium
nördlich von Platamona · Polykastro
Sabatium, known only from this map and the list of places compiled in Ravenna, was a station on the coast road from the Vale of Tempe towards Dium, probably near Platamon in Greece, where a medieval castle stands, in the country of ancient Heracleion and not far from Leibethra, a centre of the cult of Orpheus. Its name has been explained from Sabazius, a Phrygian god linked with Dionysus, or from a local Greek word for a river crossing. A milestone of Hadrian found at the mouth of the gorge counts twenty-seven miles from Larissa.
