Rusibricari Matidiae

Zemmouri el Bahri · Mers el Hadjedje

Listen to the story

Rusibricari Matidiae, the ruins of Mers el Hadjedje near Zemmouri on the Algerian coast, carries a second name from the imperial family: Matidia, a lady of Trajan's house, owned land here, and an inscription fixes the boundary of her estates. Her name still lives on in the Mitidja, the plain behind Algiers. On the map the road begins here and runs twenty-two Roman miles to Cissi.
