Roidomna

Roanne

Roidomna is Roanne on the upper Loire, a settlement of the Segusiavi older than the Romans. Ancient sources name it only three times: the Greek geographer Ptolemy counts it among the two towns of the Segusiavi, the map shows it as a simple halt with a garbled spelling, and a late Roman list of garrisons places a prefect of Sarmatian settlers in the district of Roanne. Many Roman finds, including decorated pottery, have come from the town, but only a single inscription, a tombstone. On the map, the start of the stretch to Mediolano is not marked, and its figure is too large.
