Lemavio

Lymne (Miller) · Lympne (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Lemavio is the map's form of Portus Lemanis, the Roman harbour at Lympne in Kent; the copyist probably mistook an n for a u. Tiles stamped by the British fleet and an altar set up by one of its commanders show that the fleet kept a station here. Around AD 300 a new fort was built, garrisoned by a unit from Tournai under the Count of the Saxon Shore. Its walls and bastions, known as Stutfall Castle, were partly excavated in 1850. The channel has long since silted up and become dry land, and on the map the road simply ends here.
