Listen to the story
Lignido, the ancient Lychnidos, is today's Ohrid in North Macedonia, set on a hill above the lake that once bore the town's name. It was the chief town of the Illyrian Dassaretae and a stop on the Via Egnatia, strongly fortified and supplied by many springs within its walls. By the fourth century AD it was a bishop's seat, and in 514 an earthquake destroyed it. On the map the road leaving the town simply breaks off. Perhaps the copyist interrupted the line to make room for the letter D of Macedonia and then forgot to continue it.
