Liuissa
bei Dil İskelesi
Listen to the story
Livissa, a small village on a sandy shore of the Gulf of Izmit near Dil İskelesi in Turkey, was known throughout antiquity for a single grave. Here the Carthaginian general Hannibal, guest of the Bithynian king Prusias, took poison in 183 BC rather than be handed over to Rome. An oracle had foretold that Libyan earth would cover him, and he had taken that to mean Africa. The Roman writer Pliny claimed the town was gone and only the tomb remained, yet the map marks the station with a small drawing of a hall, perhaps because Emperor Septimius Severus is said to have renewed the tomb in white marble.
