Listen to the story
Lugdunum, drawn on the Tabula with the usual pair of towers, was the westernmost fort on the Roman frontier of Lower Germany, standing where the Old Rhine then met the North Sea, near Katwijk in the Netherlands. The Roman writer Suetonius tells how Caligula, after his failed campaign against Britain, had his soldiers gather seashells on this shore as spoils of war. The fort later sank into the sea. The ruins of the Brittenburg, still glimpsed at low water into the early twentieth century, may be its remains. Leiden long claimed the name, even on its university's seal, but wrongly.
