Baromaci

Chelmsford

Baromaci is what the map makes of Caesaromagus, the Market of Caesar, today Chelmsford in Essex, on the road from London to Colchester. The first syllables stood on the lost first sheet of the map, and the copyist, not noticing, turned what was left into Baromaci. The town was probably a Roman foundation named in Caesar's honour. On the map it is the first station of its road, since the part of the map before it has been lost.
