Baloie

Šipovo on Pliva

Baloie is Baloia, a Roman town at Šipovo in the upper Pliva valley in Bosnia, spread out across a mining district on the road from Salona to Servitium; the map's spelling probably renders Baloiae, at Baloia. It became a self-governing town perhaps under Hadrian and flourished in the third and fourth centuries, with baths, a mausoleum, an early Christian church and sarcophagi. Here Minicius Fundanus, consul in 107, was honoured, perhaps as the town's patron. Baloia survived until 599, when the Avars raided from Sirmium towards Salona and destroyed forty forts.
