Baletium on the map is Aletium, now Alezio near Gallipoli, a town of the Sallentini; the extra B makes it look confusingly like the other Baletium near Brundisium, and coins inscribed Balethas have been claimed for both towns. Many inscriptions in the Messapian language have been found here, but no Latin ones, and graves and other finds reach from prehistoric times to the fifth century AD.
