Baiae

Baia

Listen to the story

Baiae appears on the map as a small drawing of a building with no name beside it, set on the peninsula that closes the Gulf of Pozzuoli near Cape Misenum. The picture is probably meant as the sign of a spa. Hot sulphur springs drew the Roman elite here, and the Greek geographer Strabo called Baiae the most visited bathing resort in the world. The emperor Hadrian died here in AD 138. The road ends at the drawing, although a continuation to Misenum might be expected. Much of the ancient resort, now Baia in Italy, has since sunk into the sea.
