A Verona Hostilia Milia Passus XXXIII

Itinerary distance entry: Verona–Hostilia (Ostiglia), 33 Roman miles

The words Auerona Hostilia milia passus, followed by the number thirty-three, are a line copied from a written route: from Verona to Hostilia, today Ostiglia on the Po in northern Italy, thirty-three miles. It is the only such entry on the map that writes out the words for Roman miles in full, and it does so with a grammatical slip, passus where Latin needs passuum. As elsewhere, the little word a, meaning from, has fused with Verona, and Hostilia stands in the wrong case. The Roman register of routes gives thirty miles, a tenth less.
