Avennione

Avignon

Avennione is Avignon, a town of the Cavares on the road that ran north from Arles along the left bank of the Rhône. It first depended on the Greek city of Massalia, received Latin rights probably from Caesar, and later became a Roman colony; the Roman geographer Pomponius Mela counts it among the richest cities of Gaul. A temple of Vulcan stood there. On the map, space below the winding river was so tight that the name and its figure had to be placed above the river, an awkward solution that becomes even more awkward for the next stretch.
