Aveia

Fossa

Listen to the story

Aveia, near the village of Fossa in the Aterno valley below L'Aquila, was a town of the Vestini, a mountain people of the central Apennines. The poet Silius Italicus, listing the Italian troops who fought at Cannae, names the young Vestini who grazed their flocks on the pastures of Aveia, and inscriptions honour the patrons of the Aveiates Vestini. The list of places compiled in Ravenna spells the name Abeia.
