Avendone

Crkvina near Brlog

Listen to the story

Avendone, the Roman Avendo, was a stronghold of the Iapodes on the road from Senia to Iader; it lay at Crkvina near Brlog, between Brlog and Otočac in Croatia. The Greek geographer Strabo calls it Ouendon, and the Greek historian Appian tells that its people surrendered to Octavian, the later Augustus, in 35 BC. Remains of an altar to Jupiter, set up by a soldier from the governor's staff, and Roman tombstones have been found here.
