Avitta
Henchir-Bou-Ftis
Listen to the story
Avitta, called Avitta Bibba in its inscriptions, lay at Henchir Bou Ftis in Tunisia, where its ruins are extensive. Even under Rome it kept a Punic form of government, led by magistrates called sufetes, until Hadrian made it a municipium; the Roman writer Pliny lists it among the free towns of Africa, and a bishop is recorded in 411 AD. On the map its distances are muddled with those of the next town.
