Autessio Duro

Auxerre

Autessio Duro is the map's name for Auxerre, a town of the Senones on the left bank of the Yonne. The same form, Autessioduro, is carved on a stone distance monument, so the spelling is confirmed in stone. The Roman historian Ammianus tells how Julian marched in 356 from Autun to Auxerre by the shortest but most difficult road. A milestone of 259, found at Prégilbert, counts seventy-two miles from Autun. An old smelting furnace and coin dies were found in the town as well. On the map, the road north to Eburobriga crosses a river.
