Ausimo

Osimo

Listen to the story

Ausimo is Auximum, now Osimo, a Roman colony on an isolated hill above the Adriatic, so strong that the Greek historian Procopius called it the chief city of Picenum and Ancona merely its harbour. Pompey raised troops here in 83 BC, and in 539 AD the town was fought over in the war between the Goths and Byzantium. On the map its distances are written in, but the road lines to either side are missing.
