Beda

Bitburg

Beda is Bitburg in the Eifel in Germany, a village on a rise beside the road from Trier to Cologne and the centre of a district of the Treveri. Its inscriptions are unusually lively: in 198 a benefactor gave the village a stage front for its theatre and money for games every year on the last day of April, and in 245 the young men of the village built a watchtower at their own cost, on land the villagers had given them. Destroyed around 275, Beda was rebuilt early in the fourth century as a fort with an oval wall and fourteen towers.
