Madus

Crayford (Barrington)

Madus is the tail end of a longer name, Noviomagus, whose beginning stood on the lost first sheet of the map; the Roman register of routes places Noviomagus ten Roman miles out of London on the road to Rochester. It is usually looked for at Crayford, or near Bexleyheath, in the south-east of London, though no Roman remains have been found at quite the right spot. On the map Madus stands at the top of a little stack of three names at the edge of the surviving parchment, where one road seems to have split into two just before the break.
