Manduris

Manduria

Listen to the story

Manduris is Manduria, a Messapian town ringed by three circuits of walls, before which the Spartan king Archidamus, fighting for Tarentum, fell in 338 BC. Rome took it back from Hannibal's side in 209 BC. The Roman writer Pliny describes a spring here whose level never changed, however much water was drawn off or poured in, and it can still be seen. Destroyed by the Saracens, the town was rebuilt as Casalnuovo and took back its old name only around 1700.
