Marcianopolis

Reka Devniya

Marcianopolis, at today's Reka Devniya near Varna in north-eastern Bulgaria, was founded by Trajan and named after his sister Marcia. It governed the province of Lower Moesia and stood where roads from Constantinople, the Danube and the coast met; a river ran through its middle. Its coins show the local cults. In the 4th century it counted as the largest city in Thrace, and Valens lived here from 366 to 370, preparing war against the Goths. One stretch on the map runs a hundred and thirty miles to Nicopolis without a stop.
