Marianis

La Canonica

Marianis is Mariana, the Roman colony on the east coast of Corsica near the mouth of the Golo, founded by Gaius Marius. Its ruins lie between the church of La Canonica and the river, and the district is still called the plain of Mariana. On the map the name stands alone, without a road, and the list of places compiled in Ravenna also names it first among the towns of Corsica. The Roman register of routes counts forty miles from Mariana to Aleria, though its figures on the island are generally too high. The site may be older still: it has been linked with a town called Nikaia.
