Listen to the story
At Elatia the road line on the Tabula simply ends, although the town guarded the main route from northern into southern Greece through the Cephissus valley. The Greek geographer Strabo ranked it with Delphi, which the map leaves out, as the leading city of Phocis, since whoever held it held the passes into Phocis and Boeotia. Its name goes back to Elatos, an Arcadian hero. The ruins lie near modern Elateia, formerly Drachmani. After holding out against a general of Mithridates around 86 BC, it was declared a free city. The map puts it twenty-five Roman miles from Chaeronea; the real distance is about twelve.
