Esco
Gigen · Гиген
Listen to the story
Esco was a Roman town close to where the river now called Iskar flows into the Danube, and its remains lie at Gigen in Bulgaria. For much of the first century AD it was the garrison of the Fifth Macedonian Legion, and under Trajan it became a colony, a town with full Roman status. Its wealth still shows in the excavated forum, a temple of Fortuna, baths and a mosaic with a scene from a comedy by the Greek playwright Menander. The town was also a road junction, with a route branching off towards Serdica, modern Sofia.
