Febrateriae
Falvaterra [2] · S. Giovanni in Carico [Pleiades]
Listen to the story
Febrateriae was the Roman colony of Fabrateria Nova, founded in 124 BC under Gaius Gracchus to replace Fregellae, which Rome had destroyed a year earlier. Its ruins lie at La Civita near San Giovanni Incarico in southern Lazio, where the Liri and Sacco rivers meet, and the town served as a station on the Via Latina. A ring wall over three kilometres long and an amphitheatre survive. Cicero mentions it, and the satirist Juvenal names it among the country towns where a whole house could be bought. How it related to the older Volscian town of the same name, near Ceccano, remains unclear.
