Foro Iulii

Fréjus

Listen to the story

Forum Iulii, the market town of Julius, is today Fréjus on the Mediterranean coast of France. Caesar founded it as a colony for veterans of the eighth legion at the mouth of the Argenteus. After the battle of Actium in 31 BC, Augustus brought the captured ships of the Egyptian fleet here, and the Greek geographer Strabo called it the naval station of Augustus. Two of its official epithets echo this: Pacensis, from the word for peace, and Classica, from the word for fleet. The Roman historian Tacitus names it as the birthplace of the general Agricola, and remains of theatres, baths and an aqueduct survive.
