Listen to the story

Florentia Tuscorum, Florence of the Tuscans, is today Florence in Italy. The added epithet fits the late Roman age, when the city served as seat of the governor of Tuscia, and a bishop Felix of Florentia Tuscorum is already recorded in 313. The Roman colony, probably founded in the forties or thirties BC, grew at an ancient ford over the Arno where several roads met, among them the Via Cassia. In AD 15 its citizens sent envoys to the Senate to stop a plan to divert the river Chiana into the Arno, fearing floods for their town.
