Fonte Timavi

S. Giovanni di Duino [8]

Listen to the story

Fonte Timavi means “at the spring of the Timavus”, the river that resurfaces from its underground course in the karst near San Giovanni di Duino in Italy. The river was itself worshipped as a god in a sacred grove, and locals called its springs the source and mother of the seas. The map marks the station with a small bath building, since warm springs lay nearby, and draws the river beneath it as a broad, nameless lake with no outlet to the Adriatic. This is probably because some ancient writers called it a lacus, a lake. No road line links the station to neighbouring Aquileia.
