Gangaris

Çankırı

Listen to the story

Gangaris is the map's form of Gangra, today Çankırı in Turkey, once the chief town of Paphlagonia, with the old palace of its rulers, a fortress and a settlement. A legend explained the name: a shepherd followed a straying goat up a steep, hard-to-reach hill where she had given birth, saw that the spot suited a town, and named it after the goat, Gangra. In 3 BC the Paphlagonians gathered here to swear their oath of loyalty to Augustus. The road on to Pompeiopolis is marked as only thirty-five Roman miles, far too short, so stations have evidently dropped out.
