Gurra
Kalaa-Kebira · القلعة الكبيرة
Gurra lay in the hinterland of Hadrumetum, modern Sousse, about twelve kilometres away, at today's Kalaa Kebira in Tunisia. Its people called themselves Gurzenses, and the town had Punic roots. Two remarkable inscriptions were found on the spot, both patronage agreements, by which a community placed itself under the protection of a powerful Roman. The first, from 12 BC, binds the local tributary communities to the proconsul of Africa; the second dates from AD 65. Citizens of the town even turn up on gravestones in Rome, and the geographer Ptolemy lists it too.
