Listen to the story
Hadrito marks Sousse on the Tunisian coast, a harbour town founded by Phoenicians from Tyre. Hannibal landed here and made it his base, and after his defeat at Zama he fled back to it. Trajan raised the town to a Roman colony with the title Frugifera, meaning fruit-bearing, a nod both to its fertile land and to the local cult of Saturn, and Diocletian later made it the capital of a new province. Stamped wine and oil jars from its trade turned up in Ostia and Rome, and in one of its villas excavators found a mosaic portrait of the poet Virgil.
