City
Hatris
Al Hadr, الحضر
Listen to the story
Hatris is the desert city of Hatra, whose ruins at Al Hadr in Iraq still stand at the edge of the steppe. The map marks it with a pair of towers, twenty Roman miles from the station named 'at the river Tigris'. The Roman historian Cassius Dio called it a fortress sacred to the Sun, perched on a steep, high rock, and it was the chief seat of an Arab tribe. Both Trajan and Septimius Severus besieged it in vain, yet by the fourth century, as the historian Ammianus reports, it already lay destroyed. The road onward to Thelser is left undrawn.
